Report: Cubs agree to deal with Gold Glover Barnhart

The Chicago Cubs agreed to a deal with veteran catcher Tucker Barnhart, a source told the New York Post’s Joel Sherman.

Barnhart’s reported pact, which is pending a physical, guarantees him $6.5 million and contains a player option for 2024, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

Chicago will pair the two-time Gold Glove winner with Yan Gomes behind the plate during the 2023 campaign.

Barnhart replaces Willson Contreras, who signed a lucrative long-term deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Barnhart spent last season with the Detroit Tigers, hitting .221/.287/.267 with 10 doubles and 16 RBIs in 94 games. He struggled defensively, with a minus-8 in defensive runs saved and a minus-2.3 framing rate.
