The Chicago Cubs re-signed left-hander Drew Smyly to a two-year contract with a mutual option for 2025, the team announced.
Smyly’s deal is worth $19 million, a source told Robert Murray of FanSided. The mutual option is worth $10 million, with a $2.5-million buyout, according to Murray.
Smyly posted a 3.47 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP over 106 1/3 innings (22 starts) for the Cubs last season. He declined a $10-million option for the 2023 campaign to become a free agent.
The 33-year-old will rejoin a group of starters that includes Marcus Stroman, newcomer Jameson Taillon, Kyle Hendricks, Justin Steele, and Adrian Sampson.
Chicago designated right-hander Erich Uelmen for assignment to make room for Smyly on the 40-man roster, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune.
