The Miami Marlins and free-agent infielder Jean Segura reached an agreement on a contract, reports Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald.
It’s a two-year, $17-million deal, according to Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital.
The 32-year-old spent the last four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he primarily manned second base. Segura played in just 98 games this past year because of a fractured finger but put up a .277/.336/.387 slash line with 10 homers, 33 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases for the eventual National League champions. Philadelphia’s run to the World Series marked the first postseason appearance for Segura in 11 big-league campaigns.
Segura adds a solid veteran bat and middle-infield versatility to the Marlins’ lineup. He can slot in at either second base or shortstop to form a double-play tandem with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and has a bit of experience at third base. Miami now has a surplus of infielders, with shortstop Miguel Rojas and third baseman Joey Wendle also on the roster, as well as prospect Jordan Groshans.
The move marks the Marlins’ first major free-agent signing this offseason. Last winter, they made several splashy moves by signing Jorge Soler and Avisail Garcia to multi-year deals, but it didn’t pay off as the team lost 93 games in 2022.
Miami was one of the worst offensive teams in baseball last year, posting a collective 88 wRC+ that ranked 25th out of 30 teams.
