Kylian Mbappe has the lead atop the 2022/23 Champions League top scorer rankings, but he finds himself with company at the summit heading into the final group stage matchday.
Mbappe’s two goals against Maccabi Haifa last time out raised his season total to six goals in the competition. However, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who scored a hat-trick off the bench the previous week, bagged the opener against Ajax in Liverpool’s 3-0 win, bringing him even with the Frenchman.
The closest contenders are Erling Haaland who failed to score at former club Borussia Dortmund last time out and is stuck on five himself. With Barcelona eliminated from knockout stage contention, Robert Lewandowski has just one more game in the Champions League to add as many goals as he can.
There’s a group of six players on four goals including Bayern’s Leroy Sane, Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, Napoli’s Giacomo Raspadori, and PSG’s Lionel Messi, with the Argentine legend scoring twice against Maccabi Haifa on Matchday 5. Mehdi Taremi of FC Porto and Giovanni Simeone both joined them in that group thanks to Matchday 5 braces.
The table below is updated after each round of matches beginning with the group stage. Assists are used as the first tiebreaker, and the second tiebreaker is fewest minutes played. Both are in line with the top scorer tiebreakers that European governing body UEFA implemented for the European Championships.

Champions League Golden Boot 2021/22
The 2021-22 Champions League scoring crown was claimed by Karim Benzema. He didn’t score in the final against Liverpool, but he did enough damage in the earlier knockout rounds to finish on 15 goals, two better than Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, but short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s single-season record of 17 (2013/14).
Benzema, who also won the scoring race in La Liga with 27 goals, had a magical season in the Champions League, willing Real Madrid into the final with his goals. His three goals against Man City in the semis were critical, and in the quarterfinals Benzema silenced Chelsea’s home crowd with three goals in the first leg, and then he also scored the decisive blow in extra time of the second leg.
