Canada vs. Austria live score, highlights, updates from 2023 World Juniors

Canada has its eyes on another victory as the defending champion faces Austria on Thursday at the 2023 World Junior Championship.

The team is less than 24 hours removed from handing Germany an 11-2 beatdown. Connor Bedard stole the show Wednesday night as he tied the Canadian World Juniors record for points in a game with seven.

Bedard and Dylan Guenther each recorded hat tricks, while Logan Stankoven and Olen Zellweger each had three points in the team’s first win at the tournament.

It was a much better effort from Canada after dropping its first game in stunning fashion, 5-2 to Czechia on Monday.

“For all three periods and 60 minutes that was Team Canada hockey,” captain Shane Wright said. “We were expecting to play a bounce-back game, and that’s what we did. You never like to run up the score, but goal differential matters.

“We started the same right away, from the first puck drop we were solid with the forecheck and playing solid defensively. Happy overall with how we played. We were  a lot more focused tonight and dialed into the game plan.”

Austria has lost both of its games at the World Juniors, and neither have been close. The team has been outscored by a combined 20-0.
