Less than 24 hours removed from an upset loss at the hands of Slovakia, the United States shifts its focus to Switzerland as the two meet on Thursday at the 2023 World Junior Championship.
After a subpar performance in an opening win against Latvia, the USA crumbled in the second period against Slovakia. The Americans allowed three goals in a span of less than four minutes, and a 2-1 lead became a 4-2 deficit.
“I think we just got away from our game in the second period and allowed a couple goals when we shouldn’t have,” Luke Hughes said. “I think we’ve just got to tighten up defensively and get back to our game. That’s kind of what cost us.”

A comeback attempt in the third period was not enough as Slovakia grabbed a 6-3 win, the team’s first at the tournament.
“We got our teeth kicked in tonight, and we’re going to rebound,” coach Rand Pecknold said after the Slovakia loss. “We’ll be really good (Thursday). It’s a lesson, it’s a teachable moment and we’ll move on.”
It won’t get easier Thursday. Switzerland is off to a great start, with wins in its first two games.
The Swiss knocked off Finland in overtime and then beat Latvia in a shootout. With four points, they entered Thursday tied for first in Group B with the Finns.
